Choosing Priorities
While choosing priorities may sound wise it can also be tough to do. It's that battle between choosing the things you want verses the things you really need. For me it can be the battle of that luxury steak dinner verse paying the utility bill; or going out for entertainment verses paying daycare expenses. While the want is oh so sweet the reality is the need has to be met.
When priorities are not chosen it can create long term financial issues. If I keep telling myself, I'll pay the light bill later eventually that bill will pile up over time and becomes more challenging to pay off. When priorities are chosen now, you can always find room for your wants later, without any financial distress.
What are priorities? It's taking care of the things that matter most "first". Things such as groceries, housing expenses, utilities, clothing, and those basic life needs may fall in the category of your priorities. Whereas your wants such as entertainment, dining out, and lattes may not be on your financial priority list.
What happens when we don't choose priorities?
Not choosing priorities now can lead to financial distress later. Expenses and debt can pile up making them challenging to pay off. You may feel a sense of regret due to the choices you've made.
Use a budget to keep track of your priorities:
I always encourage others to use a budget if they don't know what their priorities are and to keep track of priorities. Use your budget to write down your expenses according to which is top priority down to which is least priority. This helps you keep track of what matters most and stay organized during seasons of financial turmoil.
You Got This!
Choosing needs over wants can be tough especially when life gets stressful but always remember that your financial decisions can either add to stress or help reduce the stress in the long run. Today I encourage you to think about your priorities when making impulsive decisions as the decisions can affect your long-term outcome.
