Discipline: Choosing Financial Discipline

Why are you not choosing discipline??

You may think you cannot afford to save but the truth is most of us just don't have the discipline to save. Think about it, if you can find 1 dollar to purchase your favorite dessert or can scrape up change to eat out but can never seem to save a dollar, then it's not an "I can't afford it" problem it's a discipline problem!

Discipline is saying I'm going to save $1 even if it means cooking at home and not eating out; or I'm going to push back on my favorite dessert today in order to add $1 to my savings. When you practice discipline and are intentional about completing the process, what seems impossible becomes possible.

I was always that girl who could never save, I would eat out and go shopping and had no discipline whatsoever. I had to shift my mindset and realized that saving was possible with discipline and intentionality. Even with the many curveballs thrown my way, because I was intentional, I didn't stop trying, didn't give up, and kept choosing discipline. The more I practiced discipline the less challenging the task became.

So, on your financial journey remember these key things:

  • Be intentional - make up in your mind that you are going to do it and get it done no matter what obstacles come your way.

  • Be disciplined - say no to the things that will hold you back and yes to the things that will lead to success.

  • Be realistic - always set realistic and obtainable goals. Your goals still need to be realistic enough for you to obtain. You may not be able to save $100 a month like the next person but saving $10 a month may be doable for you. Know your realistic and obtainable goal.

Practice these steps and you can surely succeed!!

But discipline doesn't have to be limited to saving, you may need the discipline to pay off debt, discipline to not give all your money away to those who ask, the discipline to not overspend, as well as the discipline to save. Identify where you need more discipline and take the steps towards completing the process.
